Dry Eye Testing and Treatment From Your Kennesaw Optometrist
At Hobson Eye Associates, our Kennesaw eye doctor is committed to providing patients with the treatments needed to find relief from any number of eye conditions and diseases. One of the more common eye conditions we see and treat here in our office is that of dry eye. This common eye condition occurs when the tear ducts located around each of the eyes are not producing enough natural lubrication to keep the eyes moisturized and comfortable.
As a result, those with dry eye may experience severe eye irritation, itchiness, redness, and a number of other symptoms that can have a huge impact on their everyday life. If these symptoms sound familiar to you, it may be time to schedule an appointment with our eye doctor.
Testing for Dry Eye: What to Expect
If you suspect that you may be suffering from dry eye, the first thing we'll want to do is to conduct diagnostic testing. This will allow us to determine whether or not dry eye is truly the source of your symptoms, as it is not uncommon for other underlying causes (like eye allergies) to be mistaken for dry eye.
So, how will we go about testing you for dry eye in our office? For starters, our eye doctor will want to consult with you about your symptoms and medical history. From there, we will conduct a comprehensive eye exam that will allow us to assess many aspects of your eye and vision health.
Next, we may want to perform a Schirmer test, which involves placing some small strips of blotting paper underneath your lower eyelids to measure the amount of tears produced by each eye after a period of about five minutes. From there, we can also conduct tear quality testing by using special dyes and evaporation techniques. This will help us determine not only the amount of tears produced by your ducts, but the quality of the tears as well.
Treatment Options for Dry Eye
Generally, we should be able to provide you with a complete diagnosis on the same day as your appointment. If you are determined to have dry eye, we can then review your treatment options and help you determine which treatment is best suited for your unique needs and lifestyle.
For most people with dry eyes, using over-the-counter eye drops or artificial tears is ideal. However, if those aren't cutting it for you, we may recommend a prescription strength eye drop or even special medications. For example, if eyelid inflammation is blocking your ducts from producing and releasing natural tears, we may recommend a prescription to help reduce eyelid inflammation and thus treat your dry eyes at their very source. Tear-stimulating medications are also available.
